The dinging and clanging sound of a railroad crossing is pretty much at the limit of loud and obnoxious noises that will wake you up. What could be worse- a jet airplane taking off? Jackhammer alarm clock? The railroad crossing sound also has that psychological edge that wakes you up with the panicked “holy smokes I’m about to get hit by a train” feeling. The lights flash too.
