Surprisingly stair usage (compared to the usage of the escalator right next to the flight of stairs) increased significantly- by two thirds. Here in NYC, we use another method to get people to use the stairs in the subway- just leave the escalators sitting there broken (or entomb them in a box instead of fixing them, lol Union Square).
