LEGO’s are cool but once you buy a particular set you are locked in to that theme. Suddenly you’re using your space figures in a fire station and it just doesn’t make sense. Nine year old Greyson MacLean came up with a better idea: BrickStix. These “stickers” are actually reusable vinyl clings that attach to all major brands of building bricks (LEGO, MegaBloks, etc) allowing you to customize the bricks to your liking over and over again. With the help of his family, the product made it to the retail market and Greyson won a Young Inventor of the Year award. Each themed pack comes with around 80 clinging decals for your bricks. They’ve got some cool themes going on- outer space, city, rescue, and my favorite: splats (footprints, paint splatters, damage, destruction and mayhem), all for under $10. Nice job Greyson.

LEGO’s are a ton of fun but the pieces always seem to end up all over the place. Plus it can be heard to dig through all those pieces to find the size piece you need. No more! The Lego Sort and Store gets all the pieces organized and in one fun place. The giant sized Lego mini-fig head opens up to reveal a series of sifter levels:

Put your pieces in the top, close it up, and give it a good shake and the pieces will sort themselves out by size as they fall (or don’t fall) through the grids. This head measures about a foot high and can hold over 1000 Lego pieces! It’s a neatfreak’s best friend and kids will love stuffing the head full of bricks too. It definitely looks much better than just a plain old box for storing your Legos.

Marshal Banana (probably not his real name) is a huge Star Wars and Lego fan. He has created this huge Sandcrawler from over 10,000 Lego pieces. It’s over 3 feet long and practically big enough to fit a real Jawa in there. Speaking of the inside- look at the attention to detail:

That’s a 3 level interior with a fully detailed cockpit. It weighs over 45 pounds and took 9 months to build. There’s 4 battery packs in there and it’s fully motorized including the drop down ramp.

Sure he could have just bought the official LEGO Star Wars Sandcrawler but what fun would that be with only 1700 or so pieces. Check out the video to get a sense of scale of this monster and to see it move a bit:

Light Up Lego Facebook Like Hand

Check out the LikeLight, a fantastic project from Red Pepper. The light is made out of Lego with an Arduino microprocessor inside hooked to a few LEDs. It’s connect to the Internet. Every time a new person “likes” a specified page in Facebook the light blinks. He set it to Lil Wayne’s page to test it out and it went bazonkers (dude’s real popular I guess). Maybe he should have hooked it up to the Craziest Gadgets Facebook page which is only 22,299,605 likes behind Lil Wayne (but closing in fast! Thanks!). Video:

Since, shockingly, Sesame Street doesn’t have it’s own Lego set yet (although you can buy Sesame Street K’Nex which is similar to Lego), some Lego fanatics have taken it upon themselves to build the Sesame Street world. Here’s a closeup on Bert and Ernie. You can see that even the characters themselves are homemade from an assemblage of mismatched Lego bricks.

The Lego Statue of Liberty Sculpture Set is an impressive piece of Lego architecture that you can build yourself. Just 80 easy steps and you’ve completed the 2882 piece, nearly 3 foot tall statue. Look at this young lad hard at work on his Lady Liberty Lego:

The impressive (and slightly difficult) part about putting together this kit is that save for the torch, the rest of the pieces ARE ALL THE SAME COLOR. Although maybe that makes it easier since you only have to sort your pieces by shape and not by color and shape before you put it together. The finished product is pretty impressive, can’t deny that, I mean you’re getting a Statue of Liberty made entirely of Lego but the set is perhaps a bit too pricey for my tastes.

Royal Tenenbaums LEGO Minifigs

There’s no denying that The Royal Tenenbaums is one of the greatest movies ever and the 8th highest selling Ben Stiller movie on Amazon (fact: Heavyweights is number one!!?!?W?!T?!$F?!). But unlike other semi-popular movies like say “Star Wars” (classic Sci-Fi film, ever heard of it?), LEGO has not opted to make a set a mini-figurines featuring the likenesses of the movie’s stars. So Dave Kaleta said “hey, why not make my own?”. And he did.

Bill Murray as Raleigh St. Clair and Stephen Lea Sheppard as Dudley Heinsbergen.

Luke Wilson as Richie Tenenbaum, Gwyneth Paltrow as Margot Tenenbaum (she was adopted) and Owen Wilson as Eli Cash

Seymour Cassel as Dusty, Gene Hackman as Royal Tenenbaum, and Kumar Pallana as Pagoda.

Well done Dave. Not the greatest and most detailed DIY minifig paint jobs we’ve come across but a fairly accurate portrayal and until LEGO comes out with an official Royal Tenenbaums minifig collection (read: never) these will have to do.
